One day, global warming will inevitably lead to a critical rise in sea levels. The world’s architectural heritage will disappear under water, turning into Atlantis. It will stand on the seabed and “blow bubbles.” We propose not to wait for this moment but to develop and introduce into construction and architectural practice a typology of floating houses called “Eden Lollypop.”

Currently, funds from crowdfunding are planned to be used for engineering development, construction, and launching a test series of nine floating Eden Lollypop houses into the world’s oceans. These will be used to test the new residential typology by pairs of scientists and creative volunteers.

The floating house for a creative couple consists of two spheres connected by a tube-like placenta. The house’s stability and resistance to rocking will be regulated by a movable coupling that moves up and down the placental pole, similar to marine buoys and beacons. The lower sphere will house the ballast, engineering and technical devices (core): inverter, batteries for storing solar energy, life support systems, desalination unit, air conditioner, backup generator, fuel tank, maneuvering motor, and anchor.

The upper sphere with a total living area of 23 m2 will contain a compact garden/vegetable patch, serving as a living space for the creative couple. The perimeter of the sphere serves as a vertical vine for grapes or any other vine growing fruits, vegetables or berries. The ground level of this perimeter is a vegetable patch with common plants to be grown there. Apart from this there’s a shelf garden placed on the enclosure of the toilet unit and each bubble pod will have enough space and compost soil to grow a full scale apple tree inside - the tree is used not solemnly for harvest, but as an extra shadowing means in the bright ocean light. The layout of one unit has all the main necessary home features and is split into two levels, which allows the higher level where the tree grows to have more soil amount for the root system. The upper level is also a place for the large double bed under the tree. The lower level is a kitchen/working unit - it has a large bench built into the level change, a kitchen/working table with rotating top and all necessary built in equipment for cooking. The movable top allows the inhabitants to adjust the space accordingly to their needs. The only enclosed space inside the bubble is a sanitary unit walled for privacy on the inner side of the sphere and opened towards the sea views on the outer side of it.

The outer shell of the sphere is made of energy-efficient bioplastic — solid polycarbonate  segmented into a modular prefabricated structure, which is easy to assemble. The load bearing partitions are made of the solid bioplastic as well to keep the structure translucency. Two segments of its skin open, forming a floating ramp/bridge/terrace suitable for fishing. From the zenith sun, the inhabitants are sheltered by an umbrella dome of solar panel sections that move along the surface of the sphere with the help of special contact rollers. The inhabitants of Eden Lollypop travel on the waves of the world’s oceans, driven by cur-rents and winds. They fish, engage in creativity, philosophy, or remote work (if satellite internet is available). In the interior of each sphere, there is an architectural detail or small form object reminiscent of the sunken Atlantis: for some, a table in the form of the Parthenon capital, for others, a toilet in the form of the Guggenheim Museum. When meeting similar homes at sea, couples exchange knowledge and discuss, ensuring the continuation of architectural tradition, at least “in bubbles.” Later, when coral reefs and then islands emerge on the ocean surface, architecture can be transferred to the new land.

OPERATING SYSTEM

1   ENERGY SCHEME
The umbrella kippa hat which is a segmented solar battery collects solar power which is encapsulated into the battery blocks in the lower underwater sphere. Electric storage allows the use of sustainable energy for all necessary purposes from water desalination to motor operation.

2   WATER SUPPLY

The water is collected and desalinated in the underwater sphere and then pumped up for habitual uses.

3   COMPOSTING

All the home waste by prod-ucts (food waste and feces) are composted and used as bio compost for the floating garden.

4   STABILITY SCHEME

The floating home has two main floating modes which depend on the sea weather conditions. When the waters are calm the buoy partitions move down and the sphere goes up from the water. The ballast waters in the lower sphere go out. When the sea is stormy the buoy moves up and the sphere starts floating on the waves.
